How to be Funny

Humor has got to be one of the hardest things to give advice about. So this article isn't going to be a be-all-and-end-all guide on how to be funny. The best I can do is reflect on my own experiences and try to pull some lessons from them.

I can be a pretty funny guy. I'm never going to become a famous comedian, but if I'm hanging around someone who likes my sense of humor I can have them laughing a lot of the time. I think a lot of people fall into this category. But I've also probably lost a few points over the years by joking around at the wrong time or in the wrong way.

This article is about coming up with spontaneous humor in social situations. The most accurate term for it is probably to learn how to be witty.

So here are my thoughts on being funny. One overall theme here is that humor can be a double-edged sword. If you use it properly you can gain a lot. But misusing it will set you back. I also focus on the idea that humor, especially spontaneous humor, isn't so much consciously created as it just pops into your head fully formed.

Being funny is definitely a good thing. It makes you more fun to be around, and it allows you to inject amusement into otherwise ho-hum situations. Sitting around on a Sunday afternoon watching bad television is pretty boring, but if your hilarious friend is there cracking jokes about the shows the whole time, it's a decent way to pass the time.

But you don't have to be funny. If being funny isn't your thing there are many other ways to give people a reason for wanting to spend time in your company. I've met many guys who weren't all that funny, but who were still way cooler than me overall.

I first really got this concept when I became friends with a guy who admitted it was hard to make him laugh. Being funny wasn't an option with with him so I had to be a good, solid friend to him through other means.

Being around people who are funnier than you often has the result of making your own jokes fall flat in comparison. Usually the right things to do here is to let the other person have their moment and resort to another way of interacting with people.

Sometimes I fall into the trap of joking around too much. Of course everyone knows there's too much of a good thing. The guy who's always 'on' gets tiresome pretty quickly. People also take you less seriously if all you can seem to do is kid around. But getting a laugh from someone seems like such a good thing. They're entertained and you get the validation. It's tempting to try and keep that going for as long as you can. You may even pressure yourself to always be a great comedian. No need for that.

I also know on paper that making one good joke an hour is better than making one good joke and ten bad ones in the same amount of time, but I've failed to follow this advice many times.

Another point is that someone can laugh at something but still not like it overall. I remember bugging my parents to watch The Simpsons with me when I was younger. They'd laugh at individual gags, but obviously weren't fans of the show. You can probably think of a sitcom you don't like but will still laugh at if you ever have to watch it. People may laugh at certain antics or corny jokes in spite of themselves, but they'd really prefer not to hear them.

I think that someone's sense of humor is at least partially connected to their personality and their world view. An overly serious, uptight person isn't going to have much of a sense of humor. Someone who's more laid back and sees the absurdity in life will probably be more funny. A cynical, cerebral person will probably have a more cynical, cerebral sense of humor. A loud, obnoxious guy will probably have a more loud, obnoxious sense of humor. Most people probably understand this instinctively.

You can sometimes improve your sense of humor by adjusting your personality and the way you see things. If you're too pessimistic or anal about the world you may find you become funnier if you lighten up.

But all that applies only to a point. Just because you tell a sick or offensive joke doesn't automatically mean you're a budding child molester or KKK member. I think most people understand this as well.

Where you can run into trouble is that people will assume your sense of humor reveals what you're really like on some level. If you have an overly weird sense of humor after a while people will think you really are weird. If you're always making jokes about dark or shocking topics people can't help but wonder about you after a while. The same goes for random, immature, or socially thoughtless jokes. Look at any comedian whose material relies on using a crazy or neurotic persona. You can't help but think they're really like that to some degree.

What gets you a laugh in the short-term may be hurting you in the long-run if it affects the way people see you for the worse. At various times I've been stung with the 'weird', 'sick', and 'overly cynical' labels, all because of the way I joked around with certain people. They'd laugh at the time, but weeks later they'd make a quip like, "Man, you're crazy. I worry about you sometimes..." Be aware of what impression your jokes are making on other people and adjust them accordingly if necessary.

Humor takes part in the larger realm of conversation and social skills. People will judge your proficiency in these areas by how they show through in your humor. If you consistently make jokes at inappropriate times, or don't consider your audience, or interrupt other people to tell them, then you'll be seen as socially clueless. But as your social skills improve, your humor will get sharper as well.

Every time I make a really witty comment it never feels like a consciously crafted it. It's more like they just pop into my head in response to a certain stimulus. Like conversation, humor often just flows out of who you are as a person. If you get the 'humor generator' in good shape then it will produce good output on it's own.

This also means it usually doesn't work out when you try to force humor. I think everyone's had the experience of trying too hard to be funny and coming up with a lame, corny line that ultimately bombs. If a C-list comedian is a guest on a talk show you can often see this in action. They try to make everything that comes out of their mouth funny, but it just comes across as annoying.

You can't always be funny. Sometimes there isn't enough 'raw material' to trigger your unconscious into coming up with a hilarious line. It's better to hold back and wait for a moment when you really have something clever to say.

Have you ever been ready to speak a joke and there's a little voice, sometimes just a feeling, in your head that's saying, "Don't say that, it's really not that funny"? When you ignore that little voice you usually find that it was right the hard way. Learn to trust your instincts in these situations. You don't always get that little nagging voice, so if you do hear it, it's there for a reason.

One time my buddy and I were hanging around some guys we had just met. One of them turned out to be hilarious and had us all laughing for hours straight. He had a unique, sort of absurd sense of humor. Over the next few days my friend tried to copy the guy's way of joking around. Sometimes he would repeat exact jokes. At other times he'd try to come up with his own observations in the same style. It never really worked out. He was saying certain lines that were only funny in the context they were originally said in. Or he just wasn't as skillful in coming up with those types of jokes on his own. The thing was he was a very cool guy on his own. He had no reason to be a poor imitation of someone else.

If someone makes you laugh, or you see them making other people laugh, it can be tempting to try and steal their sense of humor for yourself. It usually doesn't work. It's forced and unnatural. There are a million ways to be funny so it's best to stick with your own practiced style.

Jobs can bring different types of people together. A few times I've been in a situation where I was working with a guy from a different 'scene' and background as me. He would try to joke around but I just didn't get his sense of humor. It went totally over my head. My mind went blank and I had nothing to say to him after each joke. I mean what can you say to something that's for all-intents-and-purposes meaningless speech to you? There's something about that that really kills rapport between people. It gives you a strong feeling of having nothing in common with the other person, and hence nothing to say to them. I guess the lesson is that if you're joking around with someone and you see that they aren't getting it, to shift gears and try to connect with them in another way.

The opposite happens when your sense of humor just clicks with someone else's. You skip all the getting to know you stuff and jump straight into being buddy buddy. So it never hurts to try joking around with someone a little at first. If it works great, but if not then drop it.

If people don't laugh, seem annoyed, or seem like they're just humoring you then put the feedback to good use. The joke may not be as funny as your think. If it seems no one ever 'gets' your dry, ironic sense of humor, then maybe you need to go back to the drawing board. If you always seem to offend people then maybe you should show more restraint with your material. Think of people's responses as a way to polish your rough edges.

If you know you made a bad joke you can often recover by making a quick comment about how much it sucked. Sometimes the comment can be funny. You can also just laugh it off and admit, "Yeah, that one was pretty lame wasn't it?"

Well it's the best way as far as I can figure. Since I believe a lot of humor just pops into your head, the best thing you can do is load up your unconscious with a lot of material to work with. Watch funny movies and t.v. shows. Read funny sites and books. Watch funny clips on the internet. Hang around funny people. Expose yourself to different styles of humor.

Some of it will stick and come out later. Maybe you'll repeat a funny line you heard. Or a certain writer will have changed the way you look at particular things. Or you'll learn a new way of delivering a joke from a comedian. You may learn a novel way to handle certain scenarios. It'll all be floating around in your head when the right situation will come up. Your brain will put the elements together and you'll come up with a killer line.

If you want to dance well at a club, learning specific partner dances or complex choreographed routines will help you to a point, but it won't directly translate. Learning stand-up comedy or improv affects your social wittiness in the same way.

Learning stand-up will improve your understanding of humor and help you craft a joke. But you come up with all the material ahead of time and then perform it. It's not the same as coming up with a clever and appropriate line on the spot in the middle of a conversation. I've known amateur stand-up comedians who weren't funny at all in real life. It wasn't that their jokes were lame, they were sober, serious guys and never even joked around that much.

Improv will help you think on your feet, but the humor tends to be more physical, hyper, and silly, and focuses on acting out scenarios. When you're sitting around with your friends and bantering about work, it's not the same as pretending you're a robot stuck in a cheese factory with Batman.

I also focus on the idea that humor, especially spontaneous humor, isn't so much consciously created as it just pops into your head fully formed.

Being funny is definitely a good thing. It makes you more fun to be around, and it allows you to inject amusement into otherwise ho-hum situations. Sitting around on a Sunday afternoon watching bad television is pretty boring, but if your hilarious friend is there cracking jokes about the shows the whole time, it's a decent way to pass the time.

But you don't have to be funny. If being funny isn't your thing there are many other ways to give people a reason for wanting to spend time in your company. I've met many guys who weren't all that funny, but who were still way cooler than me overall.

I first really got this concept when I became friends with a guy who admitted it was hard to make him laugh. Being funny wasn't an option with with him so I had to be a good, solid friend to him through other means.

Being around people who are funnier than you often has the result of making your own jokes fall flat in comparison. Usually the right things to do here is to let the other person have their moment and resort to another way of interacting with people.

Sometimes I fall into the trap of joking around too much. Of course everyone knows there's too much of a good thing. The guy who's always 'on' gets tiresome pretty quickly. People also take you less seriously if all you can seem to do is kid around. But getting a laugh from someone seems like such a good thing. They're entertained and you get the validation. It's tempting to try and keep that going for as long as you can. You may even pressure yourself to always be a great comedian. No need for that.

Another point is that someone can laugh at something but still not like it overall. I remember bugging my parents to watch The Simpsons with me when I was younger. They'd laugh at individual gags, but obviously weren't fans of the show. You can probably think of a sitcom you don't like but will still laugh at if you ever have to watch it. People may laugh at certain antics or corny jokes in spite of themselves, but they'd really prefer not to hear them.

I think that someone's sense of humor is at least partially connected to their personality and their world view. An overly serious, uptight person isn't going to have much of a sense of humor. Someone who's more laid back and sees the absurdity in life will probably be more funny. A cynical, cerebral person will probably have a more cynical, cerebral sense of humor. What gets you a laugh in the short-term may be hurting you in the long-run if it affects the way people see you for the worse. At various times I've been stung with the 'weird', 'sick', and 'overly cynical' labels, all because of the way I joked around with certain people. They'd laugh at the time, but weeks later they'd make a quip like, "Man, you're crazy. I worry about you sometimes..." Be aware of what impression your jokes are making on other people and adjust them accordingly if necessary.

Humor takes part in the larger realm of conversation and social skills. People will judge your proficiency in these areas by how they show through in your humor. If you consistently make jokes at inappropriate times, or don't consider your audience, or interrupt other people to tell them, then you'll be seen as socially clueless. But as your social skills improve, your humor will get sharper as well.

Every time I make a really witty comment it never feels like a consciously crafted it. It's more like they just pop into my head in response to a certain stimulus. Like conversation, humor often just flows out of who you are as a person. If you get the 'humor generator' in good shape then it will produce good output on it's own.

I think everyone's had the experience of trying too hard to be funny and coming up with a lame, corny line that ultimately bombs. If a C-list comedian is a guest on a talk show you can often see this in action. They try to make everything that comes out of their mouth funny, but it just comes across as annoying.

You can't always be funny. Sometimes there isn't enough 'raw material' to trigger your unconscious into coming up with a hilarious line. It's better to hold back and wait for a moment when you really have something clever to say.

Have you ever been ready to speak a joke and there's a little voice, sometimes just a feeling, in your head that's saying, "Don't say that, it's really not that funny"? When you ignore that little voice you usually find that it was right the hard way. Learn to trust your instincts in these situations. You don't always get that little nagging voice, so if you do hear it, it's there for a reason.

One time my buddy and I were hanging around some guys we had just met. One of them turned out to be hilarious and had us all laughing for hours straight. He had a unique, sort of absurd sense of humor. Over the next few days my friend tried to copy the guy's way of joking around. Sometimes he would repeat exact jokes. At other times he'd try to come up with his own observations in the same style. It never really worked out. He was saying certain lines that were only funny in the context they were originally said in. Or he just wasn't as skillful in coming up with those types of jokes on his own. The thing was he was a very cool guy on his own. He had no reason to be a poor imitation of someone else.

I mean what can you say to something that's for all-intents-and-purposes meaningless speech to you? There's something about that that really kills rapport between people. I guess the lesson is that if you're joking around with someone and you see that they aren't getting it, to shift gears and try to connect with them in another way.

The opposite happens when your sense of humor just clicks with someone else's. You skip all the getting to know you stuff and jump straight into being buddy buddy. So it never hurts to try joking around with someone a little at first. If it works great, but if not then drop it.

If people don't laugh, seem annoyed, or seem like they're just humoring you then put the feedback to good use. The joke may not be as funny as your think. If it seems no one ever 'gets' your dry, ironic sense of humor, then maybe you need to go back to the drawing board. If you always seem to offend people then maybe you should show more restraint with your material. Think of people's responses as a way to polish your rough edges.

Or you'll learn a new way of delivering a joke from a comedian. You may learn a novel way to handle certain scenarios. It'll all be floating around in your head when the right situation will come up. Your brain will put the elements together and you'll come up with a killer line.

If you want to dance well at a club, learning specific partner dances or complex choreographed routines will help you to a point, but it won't directly translate. Learning stand-up comedy or improv affects your social wittiness in the same way.

Addiction to Mood Drugs

Drugs that sedate or relax a person are called downers for short. Downers are also referred to as depressants, sedatives and tranquilizers. Downers are broken up into three categories. The three categories are benzodiazapines, barbiturates and alcohol.

All downers affect the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA in the same way. GABA is responsible for calming the central nervous system, slowing heart rate, breathing, and inducing sleep. GABA acts in counterpoint to the effects of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine. GABA and norepinephrine work together to control the heart rate and level of alertness of a person.  Too much norepinephrine can lead to a number of anxiety disorders and can be responsible for 'panic attacks', and so downers are often prescribed to treat these conditions. Although painkillers are thought of as downers, they do not act on GABA as real downers do. This difference prompts their exclusion from the downers drug group.

Downers are insidiously addictive. An abrupt end to use of downers may cause withdrawal symptoms. Because of their medicinal nature, those on prescription may find themselves unable to function without a dose of downers. These drugs can give a false sense of peace and security because of the fact that they act to relax the body. Because of these effects, downers become addictive to the people who allow them selves to crave for and achieve that artificial moment of peace and tranquility.

Much is still unknown but more positive results are expected in the future.

A study about laughter should observe laughter. Laughter and humor are a very important part of our lives. It is an emotional medicine. Humor can help you through the most trying times. Where do you begin taking care of your elderly parent(s)?

After the years they have put into raising you, and any of your siblings, it's likely that you can say they did their best; through the good times, and the stressful as well. Many can continue doing most if not all of what their life has been for a long time with some help. Lilies for Your Garden

It's best to plant your lilies in the spring or fall. When using bulbs such as with the garden lily, you will want to plant them in the ground fast as they don't have a good long shelf life. The bulb will grow out into one shoot that has leaves. Daylilies come from a corm grow out with many leaves.

 

When planting bulbs it's best to plant most of them 3 times deeper than the bulbs are wide. This applies to garden lily bulbs.  It's also wise to plant several lily bulbs in the same hole.

 

Propagating lilies isn't that complicated. For the garden lily, breaking off a few scales in the right planting time, and planting them about 1 inch deep is one of the best ways. For the daylily, dividing the corms and planting them does well. Some lilies also form bulbils which may look like black or dark green seeds, where the leaves meat the stem. Though their not actually seeds, they can be planted, and often grow within 2-3 years of planting them.

 

With garden lilies it's good to let the dead blooms stay as the rest of the plant feeds off them, and it will help you to have a better lily again next year. Blooming season for the daylily can be extended by deadheading the blooms and cutting them back to the stem. Whenever cutting off a bloomed lily, it's wise to remove only the stem. Remember, they feed off their foliage and it will improve them the next season as well.

 

Many people receive Easter Lilies at Easter time, and like to plant them outside as well. One problem with Easter lilies is that they are off season. To get them blooming at the perfect time, Easter lilies have to be grown indoors. Some advice that applies better to the Easter lily is to plant them in a sunny place that has decent soil with good drainage. You will also want to use a good planting mix. Planting them about 3 inches under the soil, and mounding an additional 3 inches above will increase the quality of your results as well. And don't forget to water it when done.

The Story behind Cigars and Tobacco

Backhoe Loader

The backhoe loader (also called loader backhoe) is used in excavation and civil engineering. It is a tractor, with a front shovel and bucket, as well as a backhoe on the rear. Digital Image Scanners for Photography

Another tool useful in the photography business is the digital scanner. You will want to understand these, since they are your interface to non-digital imagery. There are a number of choices, and styles, though the thing that really matters is the resolution it supports for you. And of course how well it scans at it's resolution. Resolution will be figured in pixels per inch (ppi) or more commonly dots per inch (dpi).

Scanners are useful beyond the darkroom with existing photos. They make it possible to get the pictures or anything else on paper into your computer. From there you can begin enhancing them with your editing software for a nearly any purpose. Then of course you will usually print out the picture afterwards, or use them elsewhere. Image scanners actually use light and it's reflection to scan the photo or other document you put into it.

Something else to consider when looking at scanners is how fast they scan things. A document (say 8.5" x 11") scanning at a very high dpi (say 3200) on some older models may take 20 minutes. On higher end and newer models in general, it should take much less time.

The 2 types of scanners that should concern you are flatbed, and film scanners. Flatbeds integrate a transparent hood to put your document on then a cover over it. Then you have it scan the photo and now you have it on your computer. With the right software they may also be useful with negatives and slides for acquiring working digital images. 3200 dots per inch on a flatbed scanner should be adequate for nearly all your photographic needs that can be done with a flatbed scanner. These can usually be found for less than $100.

Though for those in the photography field, the best scanners are the film scanners, as they are specifically built for your business. They are short of some features found in flatbeds. For one they are sized for photos and film, rather than general purpose documents. It works direct with film only (mostly 35mm). Other films are supported as well.

You might actually consider both as each has its uses, and the combined abilities may give you the best flexibility you can find. Flatbeds can scan 3D photos, for example which the film scanner will not. Yet the film scanner is more productive with film.

Back to the topic of resolution, this will be similar to some of the considerations of resolution of your digital camera. The maximum resolution of the scanner will determine how large your photos can be blown up to and still have quality. For printed photography this will need to be quite high, whereas for the World Wide Web, nearly all images are 72dpi so they look decent in the web browser, yet load fast too. Higher resolution equates to larger image files (JPG, GIF, PNG, etc).

For quality pictures for large pictures, magazines, etc, you will need higher resolution than that needed for the internet. Often 300dpi will do, though more may be needed for some applications. Film scanners scan at about 4000dpi. Editing programs, such as Adobe Photoshop enable you to lower the resolution of images to the size you need, so higher to start doesn't hurt. Another feature found in Photoshop is negative image, which can turn a negative into a correctly colored image.

If you haven't already considered resolutions for your camera, now is a good time. You will need a medium to high resolution camera to have the same benefits that scanners give you. Between these and a few other accessories, you will find that you have everything you need to excel in digital photography.

There are 2 types of income – Linear and Residual

Linear is when you work and get paid by the hour, or salary based. When you aren't working, you aren't making income. In one source, it can go away for any number of reasons, and you have no further source of income.

Residual is income that once you get it flowing it continues and often grows to with less work later on. Many forget though that up front it requires some effort as well. Once going, it keeps coming over and over again.

In the normal course of a career in a job or profession, you earn a linear income. You go in each week and at the end of the pay period you get your paycheck. If something happens to the employer's ability or reasoning to have you, or to your ability or desire to work there, the income ends right then along with most benefits it might carry. Bringing in extra income can help absorb these problems. Residual extra income sources, once flowing can keep going while you are elsewhere or even sleeping. It's a good way to supplement and absorb life's adversities. It's worth the effort to get these going.

A lot of extra income sources these days, are found online, and many have residual tendencies. Though you have to be careful in choosing as some aren't worth the words it takes to explain them (even though they may look good and successful), while others are based on solid ideas, and concepts that are already making many well off. Discipline even After School

Young children must be made to understand the importance of discipline in every way possible. Discipline is the cornerstone in the character-building process of any child. Hence, it is not necessary that children must be given lessons on discipline only in schools. Though after school programs often provide extra-curricular activities for the children, even then they must include disciplinary values in such fun activities. After school games and other extra-curricular activities must have their own set of rules which the teachers must make compulsory for all the children. If a child misbehaves or does not follow the rules, he must be immediately told about the mistake he has made. Teachers must address the mistakes in such a way that the overall atmosphere is not disturbed. If the teachers do not punish misbehaving children then a large number of children would follow which would be a very difficult problem to tackle. Dementia and delirium are the loss of memory and confusion that often come with age, in other names include senility. When found in younger patients it can be confusing for professionals, as there may be more explanations. Other causes can be as a result of heavy drug or alcohol consumption as well. In modern times these can be a little more difficulty. Sometimes it's due to health conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, and other conditions that cause blackouts.

Alcoholism and drug dependency are diagnosis's that are growing in a very large way. It's not a disorder; rather it is classified as a disease. They are often hereditary. It can go 2 ways though. The only known starting point that works to treat this is cessation of the consumption of the substances. There is a lot of evidence to link impairment in the brain to the various mental disorders and diseases. There is so much of the mind they don't understand, that they often do more experimentation than effective treatment. Until we are able to understand the brain completely, and accepting those realities, there will be problems and fewer results. It's an inside game, and in the end, each will be the only one that can deal with it in their own mind. But we will need some good help, and hopefully that will come eventually.

Your cat Tigger is spraying all over the house and anywhere else he can find. These wet spots smell bad long after they dry, and it becomes stronger by the day. Is it time to send him outside for the rest of his life?

It's because he's a male cat. He's leaving his trail for Fluffy, the female cat that comes around. It allows him to mark his territory and show how much ground he controls. Actually he's not that picky, and any female is welcome and the reason he sprays.

Fluffy at the same time, when she's in heat, will puddle about too. She may do it anywhere as well, though higher comfortable ground is her preference.

The best way to deal with this in both cases is to have them spayed. 90% of spayed animals cease these behaviors as they no longer have a reason to do it. For the other 10% it will still be easier to train them out of the habit as well. To top it off, your cat will probably live longer and have less stress after this. They will become friendlier too.

Without spaying, there are other options. You may be able to train your cat to stop, though it won't be as easy, as it's their instinct you are working against.

Often, cats by nature will sleep around during the day, and then get active and busy at night. It's more fun for them to stalk and prowl in darker conditions. One way to cut down on spraying and puddles is to keep them real active during the day, and tire them out. Cats love their rest and sleep too. If you exhaust them by day, they may sleep all night to catch up on this.

Another idea that might help would be to setup a room especially for him. He will continue to spray at least at times, so the room should have linoleum or tile to make it easier to cleanup. By all means, you must have a clean litter box there as well to encourage the right (and natural) behavior from him. A soft bed for him (or her) will be in order as well. Pillows, blankets, or anything washable will be ideal. If the room has any other furniture, you will want to cover things, or take other measures to protect it from the spraying or puddles. You will probably find a number of items at the pet store to help in this area. It would be smart to have a window to, so the cat can spy on the outside from within for a little extra excitement.

Also make sure it has food and water, though a reasonable amount. Too much might lead to excessive spraying at night. You want to train him to go outside during the day though.

A simpler solution with less comfort for the cats is a pet carrier. You will likely get meows and other howls from them though. Having this in a separate room will still limit the noise.

The importance of the sleep cycle

It is good to understand the dream process. To do that, we need to look at the mind. Where does dream come from? How does it come about? Does it have any relation to sleep cycles? These questions and more we will answer as we move along.

There are four stages in a sleep cycle. Each cycle will play itself out after the other. In short, stage 1 is stage 1 and stage 2 is stage 2 and so on and so forth. The time that each cycle takes to play itself out is entirely random. There are no benchmarks or fixed times for the length of sleep stages.

The four stages of sleep are as follows:

Stage 1:

The initial stage of sleep is a very light sleep, and the slightest disturbance can wake the dreamer at this stage.  The first stage of sleep usually lasts for only a few minutes, and most sleepers move on quickly to stage two.

 

Stage 2:

The second stage of sleep is much deeper, and it is much harder to wake the sleeper up at this point.  While the dream state begins in stage two, there are usually no clearly formed images at this point.  Instead dreams in stage two consist mainly of vague ideas and images floating around the mind.  After stage two is completed, the dreamer moves quickly on to stage three.

 

Stage 3:

The third stage of sleep is even deeper than the second stage.  At this stage, the muscles in the sleepers body have relaxed, and the heart rate and respiration rate have both slowed down.  The sleeper's blood pressure also drops off at this point, and breathing is typically even and steady.  A sleeper in stage three sleep is very difficult to awaken, and typically waking can only be accomplished by a very loud startling noise or by shouting the sleeper's name repeatedly.

 

Stage 4:

Stage four is the deepest stage of sleep, and the one in which most dreaming takes place.  During this stage of sleep, it is almost impossible to wake the sleeper.  During stage four of sleep, the sleeper moves in and out of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep several times.  It is during REM sleep that dreaming is occurring.  The eyes move back and forth rapidly under their lids, the heart beat and respiration spike, and brain wave activities increase.  As a matter of fact, studies have shown that brain wave activity is higher during dream sleep than it is during normal consciousness.

 

Most sessions of dream sleep last for about 10 minutes, after which the sleeper returns to the normal deep sleep of stage four. The dreamer will cycle back and forth between stage four sleep and dream sleep several times each night, usually repeating the process from four to seven times on an average night.

 

The dreams that are most likely to be remembered are those that take place closest to waking. Dreams that take place earlier in the night are almost never remembered. The one exception to this rule is those dreams that are disturbing enough to wake the dreamer. If a dreamer awakens in the middle of dream sleep, as with a particularly vivid nightmare or a dream about falling, he or she will most likely remember vividly every detail of the dream.

 

The Atkins Method

The Atkins method, according to it's supporters, improves overall health and gives you greater energy as a result of the program.  The more conservative health professionals maintain that the Atkins diet could lead to heart damage. 

The Atkins diet relies heavily on proteins and fats, along with carbohydrates that are rich in nutrients. The idea is to strictly reduce the amount of non-nutritious carbohydrates you consume. The theory behind this is that, when carbohydrates are restricted, you end up burning fat rather than glucose. In addition, it has been shown that, all things being equal, you will lose more fat with Atkins than with other types of weight loss plans.

During the initial stage of Atkins, your body moves from burning carbohydrates to burning fats. You should also be able to kick the sugar habit during this stage. The second stage will see your weight loss accelerate. You can begin eating larger portions of vegetables during meals. In the third stage, known as pre-maintenance, you will continue to add more foods to the mix. The last stage involves lifetime maintenance. During this phase, you can continue to fight food addictions, maintain your goal weight, and decrease the chance that you will suffer from diabetes.

However, it can be difficult to stick with the Atkins plan. This is because the temptation to eat carbohydrates and sweets is so great. Friends and relatives can become diet saboteurs, preventing you from achieving the results you're looking for. In this case, the best defense is a good offense. This means telling your significant others in advance that you're determined to complete the Atkins program. Ask them to support you and not to give you or offer you food that is harmful to your diet.

 Some medical experts say that the Atkins approach is not appropriate for people who already suffer from kidney or liver trouble. Also, because Atkins reduces the amount of fruits and vegetables an individual consumes, the diet can leave people at greater risk for such problems as cancer and heart disease. As a result, you should probably check with your family physician before resorting to the Atkins plan, or any other low-carb, high-protein diet.

It seems that the Atkins plan has received a high success rate report. Unfortunately, there are those medical issues that need to be addressed. Consulting a physician before beginning the Atkins diet will be very helpful in determining whether you can go ahead with the diet.

One Method for Canoeing, Skiing and Life

In skiing and canoeing, the leading or leaning shoulder is turned towards the direction of the objective. In life, your will to accomplish (shoulder) is turned towards the purpose of achieving or completing a goal.

On the river, rowing instructions include keeping momentum while facing downstream, canoe turned directly to the waves, with powerful strokes for slicing through the turbulent water. On the ski slope, keeping momentum with shoulders turned downhill, weight on top of skis, poles planted, and gracefully float around the moguls. In life, keeping momentum and holding firm to a direction with actions using talents and skills solely for the achievement of a goal.

 

The words above are pretty much straightforward. Take all the words, put them together and only one common lesson or message will come out. The message is all about keeping attention focused on the goal and mustering the determination and perseverance to attain the goal.

 

Sometimes though, it is easier to undertake a task if a companion or guide is present. Just the knowledge that there is someone who will help if the need arises removes that small fear and provides enough security that moving toward a goal becomes easier. Going down a whitewater course or a ski slope with someone is a lot more comforting than going at it alone.

 

When looking for a companion or role model, choose the one person who happens to be moving in the same direction. Look for a person who already managed to do what you want to do or someone slightly ahead just so that both of you can profit from each other's experiences. Discover this person's values. Do you generally hold to the same vision and moral? If you wanted advice in canoeing, you wouldn't talk to a ski expert, much less a foul-mouthed ski expert.

 

There is no better day for starting life's journey than today because only today is today and tomorrow will always be tomorrow unless you start today. Just as delaying that ski trip or canoe adventure is going to cost you more in the future, so is delaying the start of your life. Practice Your Swing

Getting the right swing, as Tiger Woods has so often emphasized, isn't as easy as you might think. You can go to a driving range everyday and swing until you drop but you will not find the correct swing unless you know the facts behind the correct way to swing. Different people have different ideas about how a correct swing should be. Fortunately for us, science has provided invaluable help in establishing the standards for the correct swing.

What is needed for the right swing? First, you need to see how the right swing is done and have the mechanics and philosophy behind it explained to you. You can start working on your technique afterwards. Stand in front of a mirror and see how you go about the motion of swinging. Correct the wrong motions and maintain the correct moves.

When working on different kinds of shots, such as fades and draws, try to work your shots around targets (i.e. a flag, a tree or a marker). This will help your eye and feel for the shots.

Try to hit your fades from the right side of the practice tee and your draws from the left side. This will help you see the actual amount of movement you are getting on your shots.

Tiger Woods had worked hard since his early days on the PGA Tour to slow his hips and legs during the downswing. Amateurs tend to use their bodies too much during the downswing. This fault is hardly surprising when virtually everything you read tells you to start your downswing with the hips and/or legs sliding and/or turning and miraculously your arms and hands and club will follow down in the correct path. This is simply not true.

Your hands control the club and cause its motion. The body, in turn, responds. When throwing a ball or hitting a baseball, the body and arms move as a response to your intention to throw or hit. You do not think about your legs and body; you focus solely on the outcome.

In golf, the body does and must move, but not to fling the hands/arms/club into the swinging motion back and down. The benefits of hitting the ball this way is that the body does not wrench itself to create the motion of the swing, thereby causing strain and injury to itself.

The body should be passive and respond to the swing created by the hands and arms. You don't hold the body still, but instead let it comfortably respond. That is why a correct setup is vital.

Here's an example of the ideal hitting action: Imagine taking a driver with zero loft and, in one blow, completely drive a six-inch nail into the base of a tree. Throughout the swing, you keep your view of the nail head constant (i.e. a stable head) and make the swing without flinging your body about to generate force (no control).

Instead, you allow your body to comfortably respond to the swing/hitting motion of the hands/arms/club. This is very close to the ideal hitting action.

How you would need to do this should be very similar to your golf swing: a constant, unchanging view of the nail or tee; hands controlling the club; arms swinging, body motion stable and responsive.

It's an easy drill. Take your driver and swing it back and forth from address to the top and back to address with out stopping. Do this several times.

While doing this, notice how your body stabilizes, your hands take charge, your arms awing, your eyes maintain and unchanging view and your body follows naturally and athletically.

Practice this technique a few times to stimulate your thought processes and help train your body to create a more stable base and you will see some real improvement in your golf swing.

As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. Hit the driving range and get your swing in order. Exercise due diligence and I just might see you on TV with Tiger over at Augusta.

How much do you REALLY know about that beige box in the corner? Well actually, how much do you understand about computers in general? This is a fear for many, and a worthwhile one to have. we have become so dependant on these super machines for day to day life, and it is only increasing as time marches on. PCs and Macs have become a crucial part of our daily routines, and to suddenly be without them would send us all into world wide confusion. It scares me sometimes, that thought. Especially seeing as i love camping in fall and winter. This, coupled with the fact that i cant be kicked out onto a couch when camping, meant i had to aquire one for the next trip. Oh and by the way, i love to camp in the colder months as the mossies and other bugs are hiding away, and the poison ivy is all dead.
